Over the years we’ve helped thousands of undergraduate students in Newcastle secure the perfect property.  We know how important it is to find the ideal student house or flat, so using our local knowledge and wealth of lettings experience we’ve put together a list of handy hints.

Timing

Our properties for the 2016/17 academic year were released in late October so our peak lettings season is now in full flow, and tends to last for the months of November and December.  The demand for properties is high, therefore, we recommend that you book your viewings sooner rather than later so you don’t miss out on your dream property – at the moment we have some great student accommodation available across Newcastle, in areas such as the City Centre, Jesmond, Sandyford and Heaton. So if you want the best choice now is the time to get cracking with arranging your viewings!

Decide on your group

Group size is probably the first thing that you need to agree on in order to make a decision on a property you like as many properties go quickly.  We have a wide selection of 1 – 8 bedroom student properties so there is a great range of choice available.  Choosing who you are going to live with in your student accommodation is a big decision - for some helpful advice on how to choose the right university flatmates then take a read of our recent blog post which covers this topic.

Location, Location, Location

Deciding exactly where in Newcastle you want to live is crucial – some helpful questions to ask yourself include how close you wish to be to university, what transport links you want to be near to and what else is important such as nightlife, nearby shops, close to green spaces etc.. our earlier blog post of The best areas to live as a student in Newcastle should give you some good pointers!

Budget

The process of viewing properties will be much easier and less time consuming if you can manage to get all members of your group to agree their budget prior to going on any viewings – this will mean that you aren’t wasting your time looking at properties that aren’t within your budget.  Also, remember to include bills in the equation when working out what the costs will be.  From our experience we would say that on average students pay circa £10 to £12 per person per week for bills.

The majority of our properties all have double rooms, however, a select few have different rents assigned to different rooms i.e. a smaller room can have a cheaper rent.  This can be really helpful to a group whereby one person has a slightly tighter budget than others.

Property Type

It’s also really important to discuss exactly what type of student property you would like to live in.  There are a number of different types you could choose including houses, flats, studios, town houses, purpose built student blocks and house shares.  Key questions we would recommend that you ask include whether you need off street parking? Would you like outdoor space? How many bathrooms would you like?

If your group can decide on the points we’ve detailed in this blog then that will really help with your student accommodation searching and make the process a whole lot easier!

All of our available properties can be viewed here and we’re currently offering viewings 7 days a week so please do get in touch either via the website, dropping in or calling 0191 222 1225 and we’ll be more than happy to help find the right student property for you.
