Newcastle Student Life – Roseworth’s tips for making your accommodation cosy this winter

Saturday 26 November 2016

Winter is here in Newcastle! The weather is ferocious, people are lining up to see this year's Fenwick's window display, and the Christmas lights have been switched on. We're spending more time indoors but it doesn't have to be all doom and gloom. Here at Roseworth we've put together some top tips for creating a cosy atmosphere in your Newcastle student accommodation over the Christmas period.

Make a batch of mulled wine

It’s a Christmas classic!

To make a batch of mulled wine you will need:

  • 1 bottle of red wine
  • 60g of demerara sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 orange half

Put the wine, orange and cinnamon with the sugar into a saucepan. Heat until the sugar has dissolved. You can add more sugar if you like it sweeter. Strain the liquid into a heatproof glass.

Decorate your student accommodation

Don’t underestimate the soothing power of a well-decorated student flat or house! It doesn’t need to be anything fancy. If you’re feeling creative then you can make your own – paper snowflakes take minimal effort with few materials.  Or (student budget permitting) head to your nearest pound shop for a haul of tinsel and other festive extras. If you decide to pool your money to buy a tree make sure you shop around for the best deal. And if you’re getting a real one then watch out for the needles!

Embrace ‘Hygge’

Hygge is a Danish word which can be loosely translated into English as ‘cosiness’. It means creating a warm and friendly atmosphere in the home. To max out on cosiness you could invest in some fleece blankets, throws and pillows for your lounge over the winter period.  Although Hygge doesn’t need to cost anything as it's also about kindness. Before you go your separate ways for Christmas why not organise a meal with your Newcastle student flatmates and friends? Read more about Hygge here

Have a Christmas movie marathon

Nothing beats a festive themed movie marathon. Pick your favourite festive film, cosy up and tuck into some popcorn. Stuck for suggestions? You can’t go wrong with Home Alone (1 and 2)! Jingle All The Way is another Roseworth favourite.
