Newcastle Student Life – escape the city and explore North East beaches

  • Students Beach Winter

Suffering from January blues? Assignments getting you down? Newcastle student life is great but sometimes you need to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. There is something magic about the seaside in winter and in the North East we have lovely beaches. Plus, with excellent public transport links it means it’s easy to get to the coast even if you don’t have a car – although make sure you wrap up warm!

South Shields

South Shields is only a metro ride away. It might be a little cold for ice cream at Minchella & Co but you can grab a coffee on your way to the seafront. Save your pennies for the arcade and get your fortune read by Zoltar.

Tynemouth

Every Saturday and Sunday Tynemouth metro station comes alive with rows of market traders selling a variety of goods from cakes to second-hand books to antiques. Get there early to score the best bargains and to get in the queue for Marshalls legendary fish and chips.

Further afield:

Bamburgh

Take in beautiful views of the Farne Islands from the beach at Bamburgh.  If you can’t drive there is a bus which leaves from Haymarket (but bear in mind it’s quite a journey).

Sea Houses

The historic fishing village of Sea Houses may be small but beaches nearby offer sandy planes as far as the eye can see. Head here for a peaceful day trip. It’s not far from the town of Alnwick which plays host to a famous castle that you'll recognise as Hogwarts in Harry Potter.

Holy Island (Lindisfarne)

You might have heard of the tidal island of Lindisfarne. With a recorded history from 6th Century AD there’s plenty to learn about previous settlers and it’s still possible to walk the ancient route known as Pilgrim’s Way.  Remember it’s imperative you check tide times before crossing the causeway.
